Stone Hammer
The Stone Hammer gives the Defender an AoE knockback slam that triggers every 8 hits. The slam sends nearby enemies flying backward along their path, interrupting their forward momentum and temporarily removing them from melee range. It's a useful early-game crowd control item that buys extra time for your Archers and Healers to operate — but the 8-hit cooldown means its actual impact depends heavily on your Defender's attack speed.
How the Slam Mechanic Works
The Defender tracks a hidden hit counter while the Stone Hammer is equipped. On the 8th consecutive hit, the counter resets to zero and a ground slam triggers centered on the Defender's current target. The slam deals bonus physical damage to all enemies within approximately 2 tiles of the slam location, and knocks them backward along their path.
Key slam mechanics:
- The hit counter is per-Defender, not per-enemy — hitting 7 different enemies and then one more still triggers the slam. The counter tracks total hits from the Defender, not against any specific target.
- Knockback distance is approximately 2 map tiles — enemies are pushed backward along the path they came from. This is effective in corridors and straight sections; in winding maps, enemies are pushed around bends.
- The slam itself deals bonus damage in addition to the knockback — it's not just crowd control, it's a damage spike every 8 hits.
- The counter does not reset between waves — if you end Wave 3 with 5 hits on the counter, Wave 4 starts with the counter at 5. This means a slam can trigger on the very first hit of a new wave if the counter was close to 8.
Attack Speed and Slam Frequency
The more frequently your Defender attacks, the more frequently the slam triggers. A Defender with a standard attack speed will slam approximately every 8–12 seconds in normal gameplay. If you've invested in the attack speed skill tree nodes or equipped a Swift Helm, the slam can trigger every 4–6 seconds — nearly doubling its crowd control effectiveness.
This means the Stone Hammer scales with attack speed investment in a way that the Ban Hammer's 15% proc chance does not. If your build focuses on fast-attacking Defenders, the Stone Hammer's effective slam rate becomes genuinely competitive.
Synergy With Ban Hammer
Equipping both the Ban Hammer and Stone Hammer on the same Defender creates a powerful dual-CC kit:
- Ban Hammer stuns enemies (with +25% damage debuff) on 15% proc chance.
- Stone Hammer knocks back a group of enemies every 8 hits.
- A stunned enemy hit by the Stone Hammer's slam takes the +25% damage from the stun debuff on the slam's AoE hit — amplifying the slam damage.
- Enemies knocked back by the slam who survive and re-approach the Defender are fresh targets for another Ban Hammer stun cycle.
This combination is one of the more durable Defender setups for Round 20–60 in Endless Mode — the consistent CC chain keeps your Defender alive even as enemy HP scales up.
When to Use the Stone Hammer
- Early Endless Mode (Rounds 1–40) — The slam's AoE damage is enough to contribute meaningfully at this stage, and knockback prevents groups from overwhelming the Defender.
- Story Mode missions 1–5 — Solid item that doesn't require specific timing or stacking mechanics. Straightforward crowd control for newer players.
- When your Archer is carrying the run — Knockback buys extra time for Archer items like Wand of Lightning to deal more hits per enemy. If your Archer is doing most of the damage, a Stone Hammer Defender that keeps enemies away is a strong support choice.
- As a Ban Hammer combo — If you have Ban Hammer already, Stone Hammer becomes a natural second slot upgrade.
When to Cauldron It
Stone Hammer is a Rare item. Once you're past Round 40 and the Cauldron offers Epic or better Defender items, prioritize upgrading:
- If the Cauldron offers a Ban Hammer, replace Stone Hammer with it (unless you already have Ban Hammer, in which case keep both).
- If the Cauldron offers Legendary Defender items (currently Pumpkin King is the main Legendary option), take it.
- If no upgrade is available, keep the Stone Hammer — consistent crowd control that doesn't require stacking is reliable.
Item FAQ
Does knockback affect bosses?
Yes, bosses can be knocked back by the Stone Hammer slam, but the knockback distance on bosses is reduced (approximately 0.5 tiles vs. 2 tiles for regular enemies). It's a brief interruption rather than a meaningful repositioning. For boss fights, the Ban Hammer's stun is generally more impactful than the Stone Hammer's knockback.
Does the hit counter reset when switching items?
Yes. Equipping or unequipping the Stone Hammer resets the hit counter to zero. Avoid swapping items mid-wave if you're close to triggering the slam.
Does the slam damage scale with Defender level?
The slam's AoE damage scales with the Defender's base attack damage, which is improved by the skill tree. Investing in the Defender damage skill tree nodes improves both regular hits and slam damage simultaneously.
