Ultra Vision Goggles
The Ultra Vision Goggles grant two significant effects simultaneously: a +40% range increase and a targeting override to highest HP enemy first. The range bonus alone would make it A-tier — a 40% range extension on an Archer dramatically changes which map positions are viable and how long enemies stay in the kill zone. The highest HP targeting makes the Goggles the premier item for eliminating elite and champion enemies before they cause problems. Added in the v1.0.3 Cauldron update.
The +40% Range Bonus — What It Changes
A 40% range increase is substantial. Default Archer range covers roughly 3–4 tile lengths in most map orientations. The Goggles extend this to nearly 5.5–6 tiles. In practice this means:
- More placement flexibility — Archers can be positioned further from the enemy path while still attacking, which has indirect benefits for the Lone Ranger mechanic (easier to place in isolation).
- Earlier engagement — The Archer begins firing at enemies sooner after they enter the map area, increasing total damage dealt per enemy pass.
- Better map coverage — On maps with converging paths or tight chokepoints, the extended range lets a single Archer cover zones previously requiring two separate placements.
- Pierce synergy — With the Emerald Bow equipped, a longer range arrow travels through more of the enemy column before the column begins to disperse.
Highest HP Targeting Explained
The default Archer targeting priority is "first enemy" (furthest along the path). The Ultra Vision Goggles override this to highest current HP among all enemies within the extended range. This is a significant behavior change:
- Elite enemies are targeted immediately on entry if their HP exceeds the current wave's standard enemies. This prevents elites from sneaking through while the Archer focuses on weaker targets.
- Champion enemies in Endless Mode are almost always the Goggles' highest-priority target, ensuring your DPS Archer focuses on the threat that matters most.
- The downside: standard wave clearing can be less efficient. A half-health elite might be targeted over full-health regular enemies that are closer to your base. For pure wave clearing, "first" targeting is often better.
Best Builds Using Ultra Vision Goggles
Interaction With Lone Ranger
The Lone Ranger skill tree node grants +20% damage when an Archer is placed with no adjacent towers. The Ultra Vision Goggles make it significantly easier to maintain the Lone Ranger bonus in later rounds — because the 40% range extension means the Archer can cover the same area while placed further away from defensive clusters where adjacent-tower violations tend to occur.
On maps with limited isolated placement spots, Goggles effectively open new valid Lone Ranger positions that previously would have been out of range of the main enemy path.
Synergy With Pierce Items
The Emerald Bow and Venom Bow both benefit from the Goggles' range extension in different ways:
- Emerald Bow: More range = longer arrow path through enemy columns. Enemies near the back of a wave column take the highest ramp damage — starting the arrow from further back means it passes through more enemies before the column compresses into shorter pierce segments.
- Venom Bow: Range extension means poison stacks begin applying to enemies earlier in their wave path, giving each enemy more stacks by the time they reach your Defender. More stacks = more burst procs = more slows in the same wave duration.
Item FAQ
Does the +40% range apply to the Wand of Lightning chain range?
The range bonus applies to the Archer's initial attack range (how far it can initially fire). The chain range of the Wand of Lightning is separate — it depends on how spread out the enemies are, not the Archer's base range.
Can you override the highest HP targeting back to first enemy?
Yes. The skill tree has a targeting override node that forces first-enemy targeting regardless of equipped items. If you want the range bonus but prefer first-enemy targeting, invest in that skill node.
Was this item in the game before v1.0.3?
No. Ultra Vision Goggles was added in the v1.0.3 Cauldron update along with 7 other new items.
